How Creative Leaders Can Leverage Key Metrics to Manage Up, Down, and Sideways

Franklin Energy’s creative team, represented by Senior Creative Director Cherise Oleson, faced the common challenge of proving creative value and keeping projects on track while building stronger ties with business leaders. Creatives often struggle with reporting and metrics, so the team needed a way to surface meaningful KPIs, manage workloads, and communicate status and roadblocks across partners and leadership.

Cherise implemented a structured reporting cadence: weekly one-on-one project lists for direct reports, weekly status reports for partner departments, a monthly “Snapshot” with key YTD metrics (rush volumes, review rounds, time in review vs. completion), and a quarterly visual Creative Scorecard for leadership that includes work samples. By asking leaders which numbers mattered and delivering consistent, transparent reports, the team improved expectations, removed bottlenecks, prevented projects from falling through the cracks, and demonstrated the creative team’s strategic value.
