Stability of the Ohio River Locks and Dam Determined Utilizing @RISK

The customer, Greenup Locks and Dam, required a detailed analysis of the internal stability of its aging infrastructure on the Ohio River. The challenge was to determine the probability of failure for different monoliths and to plan for necessary rehabilitation to ensure the continued safe and vital operation of the shipping lock system. Lumivero's @RISK software was utilized to perform a Monte Carlo simulation and model this structural performance.

Using @RISK, Lumivero's solution enabled engineers to model complex probabilistic variables, including material strengths and soil properties, to forecast performance through the year 2070. The analysis clearly identified which monoliths required mitigation and which would remain stable, providing the critical information needed for planning. This ensured the continued operation of a lock system responsible for transporting billions of dollars in goods annually, safeguarding a crucial commercial shipping route.
