A Lumivero Case Study
Metaproject was engaged by the Chilean government to determine the safest and most effective method to rescue 33 miners trapped 700 meters underground. The challenge involved significant risk from potential further landslides, geological instability, and the miners' deteriorating health. The firm utilized Lumivero's PrecisionTree decision analysis tool to model the complex rescue operation and evaluate the viability of various technical options.
Using Lumivero's PrecisionTree, Metaproject modeled multiple drilling and tunneling alternatives, quantifying risks based on exposure time, event probability, and severity. The analysis identified using the Schramm T-130 drill (Option B) as the optimal solution, recommending it be deployed simultaneously with a second drill for redundancy. The model's findings were successfully validated when the Schramm T-130 was the first drill to reach the miners, leading to the safe rescue of all 33 individuals within 22 hours once the operation began.
