Combining NVivo and Endnote for a quality assessed metasynthesis of literature

Aarhus University researcher Ole Steen Kristensen faced the challenge of synthesizing a vast and diverse collection of qualitative literature on youth transitioning from foster care. The complexity of the research, coupled with difficulties in indexing and database access, made it extremely difficult to generalize findings and develop an overarching theory. To manage this, he utilized software from Lumivero, specifically employing NVivo and EndNote to tackle the project.

By combining EndNote for initial database management and article sifting with NVivo for detailed import, coding, and querying, Lumivero's tools enabled a rigorous quality assessment process. This solution efficiently narrowed over a thousand articles down to 30 high-quality studies for a final metasynthesis. The results provided a clear hypothesis for future publication and created a quality-assessed database for ongoing research. Furthermore, the success of this project has led to the continued use of Lumivero's NVivo in both the researcher's future work and in the projects of his students.
