Technip creates an as-built 3D model of the Chickasaw with Luminous Group Ltd in 2012

Technip, a barge owner, needed an accurate as-built 3D record of their Chickasaw reel barge in the Gulf of Mexico for documentation and refurbishment planning, but no current plans were available. They commissioned Luminous Group Ltd, through survey company Utec, to use their 3D laser scanning and CAD modelling services to overcome this challenge.

Luminous Group Ltd created a solution where scan data captured offshore was processed into a registered point cloud and a comprehensive 3D CAD model by their UK-based team, assisted by Leica TruView for accuracy. The deliverables provided Technip with a precise and permanent geometric record of the entire vessel, enabling engineers to design modifications against measured data to ensure new components fit correctly the first time, thereby reducing the need for costly rework.
