The customer, ConocoPhillips, faced the challenge of ensuring the dimensional accuracy of fabricated subsea manifolds and connecting spools for a new offshore gas development. Inaccuracies, if discovered after installation in the North Sea, would be extremely costly. A previous traditional dimensional control survey had failed to identify critical errors. Luminous Group Ltd used its 3D laser scanning and as-built modelling services to provide comprehensive quality assurance before the parts left the fabrication hall.

Luminous Group Ltd scanned the structures to create complete 3D replicas, enabling clash detection against the design model across the entire surface. This approach identified critical errors that the point-based survey had missed, allowing for rework to be done cheaply in the shop rather than at sea. The solution established as-built scanning as a vital QA verification step for ConocoPhillips and its contractor, Saipem, ensuring all fabricated items would fit correctly the first time and preventing costly vessel delays.
