Preview of the Sylvatica Case Study

Sylvatica - Customer Case Study

Sylvatica developed the Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP) tool for the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to help small and midsize organizations do life cycle assessments (LCAs) when traditional LCA methods are too costly and time-consuming. To build an accessible, open-source model that anyone could run without expensive software, Sylvatica used the Analytica modeling environment from Lumina Decision Systems and the free Analytica Player.

Using Lumina Decision Systems’ Analytica, Sylvatica delivered the EPP tool that multiplies purchased-product quantities by impact factors to estimate depletion of nonrenewable resources, greenhouse gases, human-health impacts, and other emissions, letting organizations compare year-to-year purchasing changes. The vendor’s Analytica platform lets the open-source model run on Analytica Free 101 and is now in beta with multiple organizations; early results show mean reductions across impacts such as fossil fuel depletion, greenhouse gases, and human-health effects as organizations prioritize greener purchasing.
