Megajoule is an open online platform that aggregates and shares structured estimates and projections for energy technologies, helping stakeholders navigate widely varying forecasts (for example, projected capital costs for utility-scale solar PV). The challenge was collecting, standardizing, and making transparent high-quality projections of costs, efficiencies, and uncertainties; Lumina Decision Systems supported the effort through internal R&D funding to help address this need.

The solution is Megajoule.org’s structured, searchable database and graphing engine that stores fully documented estimates (value, units, uncertainty, assumptions, source, year, region, etc.), making it easy to compare and analyze projections. With Lumina Decision Systems’ support, the live beta now contains datasets for solar PV, EV batteries, and biofuels, provides visualization and detailed estimate views (e.g., a 2030 levelized cost entry of $0.238/kWh), and lets users browse, rate, comment, and contribute — improving transparency and speeding access to standardized energy projections.
