CITL Finds $44 Billion in Healthcare Savings

The Center for Information Technology Leadership (CITL), a nonprofit chartered by Partners Healthcare of Boston, needed to determine whether computerized provider order-entry (CPOE) systems would deliver clear quality improvements and cost savings in outpatient care amid rising healthcare costs and millions of annual medication errors. To build a rigorous, uncertainty-aware analysis, CITL used Analytica from Lumina Decision Systems.

Using Analytica, CITL created a model showing that US-wide adoption of advanced CPOE could prevent over 2 million adverse medication reactions annually (about 130,000 life‑threatening) and produce roughly $44 billion in net annual savings by avoiding ~1.3 million outpatient visits and 190,000 hospital admissions and improving ordering efficiency; CITL now distributes the Analytica model online so clinics can estimate their own costs and savings — demonstrating the impact enabled by Lumina Decision Systems.
