South Dakota advances public safety statewide with NG9-1-1 network and services

South Dakota, a statewide public safety organization serving nearly 1 million residents across a large and geographically diverse area, needed to upgrade 28 PSAPs to next-generation 9-1-1 on a tight timeline. Working with Lumen, the state faced end-of-life equipment deadlines, complex logistics, and the need to coordinate technology, funding, and training across all locations.

Lumen delivered an end-to-end NG9-1-1 solution using Lumen NG9-1-1 Services, an MPLS IP VPN backbone, Intrado call-handling software, and security services. The upgrade connected all 28 PSAPs plus two backup facilities, trained all PSAP staff, and improved statewide public safety while creating a foundation for future video and text capabilities.
