A Lumen Case Study
Pima County, Arizona, needed to migrate its emergency services and Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) to next generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) technology, but had to do it within tight funding and operational constraints. The county also needed a partner that could support training and long-term operations across nine PSAPs. Lumen was selected to help modernize the county’s 9-1-1 infrastructure with managed services.
Lumen implemented a managed NG9-1-1 solution built on an MPLS network backbone dedicated to 9-1-1 traffic, with 24/7/365 monitoring from a dedicated Network Operating Center. The solution included Intrado VIPER and Motorola Solutions VESTA call-handling systems, plus staff training and support. As a result, Pima County saved $30,000 per month in operating costs, eliminated a redundant network, improved call handling speed, and reinvested savings into new capabilities like GIS integration.
