3M boosts safety compliance with Lucid Reality Labs VR training

The customer, 3M, faced a persistent challenge with machinery operators underestimating workplace hazards, leading to complacency and unsafe practices around lamination equipment. Traditional safety training methods were failing to instill a deep understanding of the risks or shift worker mindset. To address this, 3M partnered with vendor Lucid Reality Labs to develop an immersive VR training simulation.

Lucid Reality Labs developed a high-fidelity virtual reality experience that replicated the lamination machinery and workspace. Using hand tracking and inverse kinematics, the solution allowed operators to safely experience the consequences of unsafe actions in a realistic, first-person environment. This approach created a strong psychological impact, transforming awareness into long-term behavioral change. Following the training, participants demonstrated higher compliance with safety guidelines, increased attention to detail, and a measurable improvement in risk perception.
