Omni Centre achieves SIRAS Gold and avoids 36 kilotonnes of CO₂ with LRQA

The Omni Centre, a major leisure destination in Edinburgh, faced significant concrete corrosion in its multi-storey car park caused by de-icing salts. The challenge was to develop a long-term corrosion management strategy that would ensure structural durability with minimal operational disruption. To address this, the Omni Centre worked with LRQA on a pilot of its Structural Integrity and Resilience Accreditation Scheme (SIRAS).

LRQA implemented a solution using advanced cathodic protection technologies, including an Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) system and galvanic zinc anodes. This multi-layered approach targeted high-risk areas across several parking levels and ramps. The project achieved the SIRAS Gold Award, recognizing its exemplary corrosion control. A key measurable impact was avoiding over 36 kilotonnes of embodied CO₂ emissions by choosing ICCP over traditional concrete replacement.
