Case Study: Florida International University advances IoT education with Losant

A Losant Case Study

Preview of the Florida International University Case Study

How One University is Using Losant For IoT Education

Florida International University (FIU), a major public research institution, sought to fill the IoT workforce gap by creating the first IoT degree program in the United States. A key challenge was providing students with practical, hands-on experience connecting hardware sensors to the cloud. To address this, Professor Herman Watson chose the Losant application enablement platform for his students to use.

The solution was implemented in a Programming Embedded Systems course, where a four-week exercise was added using Losant and ESP8266 hardware. This gave students their first departmental experience with MQTT communications and cloud-based visualization dashboards. Losant provided the necessary flexibility, security, and bidirectional communication capabilities, enabling students to successfully complete projects and gain valuable IoT development skills.
