Queensland Health transforms patient referral management with Loqate

Queensland Health, the public healthcare provider for the state of Queensland, faced the challenge of managing around two million outpatient referrals each year, much of it still paper-based and often incomplete. This created inefficiencies, longer specialist waiting lists, and delays in patient care, while GPs lacked a single, reliable source of information for available specialist outpatient services. Loqate’s address verification and geocoding capabilities were used as part of the broader referral management initiative.

Loqate helped Queensland Health and NextGate implement a state-wide Referral Service Directory through NextGate’s Provider Registry, embedded with Loqate’s global address verification solution. The system now validates and standardizes address data, supports geocoding, and helps match patients to the closest appropriate healthcare service, improving referrer visibility, reducing administrative burden, and speeding up referrals. With 11 of 16 HHS sites live, the directory stores 13,167 addresses and 639 healthcare practices and facilities, and has supported more than 2 million Address Verification Service requests.
