World Resources Institute brings transparency to 150-person decisions with Loomio

The World Resources Institute, a global environmental nonprofit, faced a significant challenge in managing transparent and efficient decision-making across its 150-person restoration team distributed across three continents. Their existing infrastructure, including email and a complex RACI matrix, was failing; decisions were lost in communication noise, and there was a lack of clarity around who was consulted and accountable. To address this, they implemented the Loomio platform.

Using Loomio provided a structured, transparent system of record that separated consequential decisions from the noise of other communication tools. The solution enabled a clear multi-stage approval process across time zones, giving distributed teams a chance to weigh in. While the rollout revealed cultural challenges, leadership modeling and process adjustments led to progress in transparency, accountability, and inclusivity. WRI is now expanding its use of Loomio from a successful Africa pilot to its Latin America programs.
