Using data to monitor, react, and help patients with COVID-19

Commonwealth Care Alliance (CCA) is a nonprofit, community-based healthcare organization that manages care for high-cost, high-needs members with complex medical, behavioral and social needs. When COVID-19 emerged, CCA faced the challenge of quickly understanding evolving risks, service disruptions, and which members needed urgent, personalized support—so they needed timely, reliable data to guide rapid clinical decisions.

CCA’s Data Science team used Google Cloud BigQuery and Looker (LookML) to build and iterate clinician-facing dashboards and “action boards,” creating custom metrics (e.g., “COVID‑19 high risk,” congregate living flags) and integrating service‑closure data. Delivered within hours to days, these tools gave care managers real-time priorities and links to next steps, enabling targeted outreach (meals, meds, assessments, social contact), faster interventions, and scalable, data-driven care that improved member protection and operational response during the pandemic.
