Migrating to Google Cloud to build a modern serverless environment

SmartHR, one of Japan’s leading HR cloud companies, needed to replace a soon-to-end DBaaS service and fix growing challenges around internal controls, security, and operational complexity as its platform scaled. SmartHR also wanted to standardize its technology stack and reduce the learning burden on development teams while modernizing its cloud infrastructure.

SmartHR migrated its platform to Google Cloud using Cloud Run and App Engine flexible environment, with Terraform for infrastructure management and integration with BigQuery and Looker for operations. The move to Google Cloud improved performance dramatically: SmartHR said throughput increased from 100 rps to 500 rps, while also simplifying permissions, strengthening security controls, and enabling more consistent, scalable operations.
