Inspiring curiosity for science in kids with Google Cloud solutions

Augmented Human Lab at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute set out to inspire children’s curiosity in science through its Kiwrious ed-tech platform, but its small team needed to move beyond an on-premises setup to support rapid growth, secure student data, and reduce time spent on operations. The challenge was to scale globally, speed up software delivery, and gain the security needed for ethics approvals. While the case study highlights Google Cloud, it’s clear the lab needed a modern cloud platform for the work.

Augmented Human Lab implemented a cloud-based solution that automated deployment and scaled the platform using tools such as Cloud Build, Google Kubernetes Engine, and Cloud Load Balancing, while Google Forms and Drive helped secure sensitive data. The impact was substantial: release time dropped from two days to 10 minutes, DevOps monitoring and maintenance saved about eight hours per week, and student queries are expected to rise from about 400 to 100,000 per day as the program expands to about 5,000 students.
