Efficient Reporting Ensures Much Needed Control Across a Complex Organization

EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG, the third-largest German utility with about 6 million customers and roughly €16 billion in 2008 revenue, faced inconsistent, duplicated reporting after multiple mergers left a fragmented IT and data landscape. Accounting and controlling used separate consolidation tools (SAP FI‑LC and Hyperion) and ad hoc Excel/Word processes, producing conflicting figures across some 120 external reports and slowing monthly management reporting.

EnBW implemented a consolidated reporting environment using SAP SEM‑BCS and SAP BW with arcplan Enterprise as the front end (the BISmARK system), enabling direct data extraction, standardized formats, formatted annotations and multi-user editing. The new process eliminated duplicate consolidations, let subsidiaries release report pages independently, supported simultaneous annotation by up to 40 users, and now serves about 350 users—yielding consistent, auditable reporting, faster distribution to the board and stronger decision support across the group.
