Sizing and scaling the new VDI environment

The Municipality of Utrecht, a Dutch city preparing a move to a new town hall and flexible workplaces, needed to renew its ICT and deploy a large VDI environment with guaranteed performance. To get an independent baseline and a performance guarantee for an expected 3,725 simultaneous sessions, the Municipality of Utrecht engaged Login VSI to measure startup and login times and assess application responsiveness before tendering and rollout.

Login VSI ran baseline tests and real-life workload simulations — including a full stress test of 3,725 concurrent users — against the municipality’s FlexPod/VMware Horizon View environment, identifying several performance improvements that were implemented with the system integrator and vendors. Thanks to Login VSI’s testing and workload generation, the VDI rollout was well planned and delivered predictable virtual desktop performance; more than 5,000 users were migrated (Oct 2013–June 1, 2014) and roughly 2,000 thin clients now serve 60+ locations, enabling a smooth move to the new Town Hall.
