The University of California is a public research system spanning 10 campuses, 5 medical centers and more than 273,000 students. While UC has integrated risk management across its operations, the scale and complexity of the institution made it difficult to know which areas to prioritize for time and resources.

UC’s Risk Services used the RIMS Risk Maturity Model (RMM), with Carrie Frandsen applying assessment results to validate strengths and pinpoint improvements in its ERM framework. By building tailored resources and technology through the Risk & Safety Solutions team and promoting the mantra “ERM = Everyone is a Risk Manager,” the University strengthened risk-informed decision-making across units and earned 2017 RMM Recognition.
