The LEGO Group, a family-owned global maker of the iconic Lego toy, needed to ensure its enterprise risk management matched the company’s “only the best is good enough” standard across a complex international footprint. The challenge was to proactively identify and manage risks to key business projects and strategic initiatives and to build resilience and measurable tolerance levels across the organization.

To meet that challenge LEGO implemented three core processes — an elaborate risk-identification method, proactive risk management for key projects, and workshop-based reviews of strategies and complex initiatives — supported by board-approved risk tolerance benchmarks and the RIMS Risk Maturity Model. These practices strengthened its risk culture, earned the company recognition in the 2015 RMM Recognition Program, and set a roadmap for continued ERM maturation.
