Chesapeake Employers Insurance Company, a Maryland-based, non-profit workers’ compensation insurer founded in 1914, sought to make its enterprise risk management more proactive and better communicate risks across the organization. Leadership wanted clearer accountability for top risks and an objective way to benchmark the program’s effectiveness.
They introduced a monthly risk dashboard and a Top 10 Risk Response Plan tied to existing risk appetite and tolerance, used the RIMS RMM for benchmarking, and built an online resource library. These steps increased ERM-team engagement, triggered timely responses when indicators neared limits (including reallocating risk budgets or adjusting limits), held executive owners accountable with quarterly reporting, and improved organization-wide risk communication.
