LAPD Using Virtual Reality to Train Pilots with FAA-Certified Loft Dynamics Simulator

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Air Support Division, the largest municipal airborne police unit in the US, faced a challenge in effectively training its pilots for complex, mission-based scenarios with the necessary realism and frequency. To overcome this, they partnered with vendor Loft Dynamics to utilize their FAA-certified virtual reality flight simulator.

Loft Dynamics implemented a VR simulator featuring a full-motion platform and a full-scale replica cockpit of the Airbus H125. The solution included customized law enforcement scenarios and the use of LofTWIN, a platform that allows the chief pilot to create and share immersive lessons. This provided LAPD pilots with highly realistic, accessible, and consistent training for critical procedures. As a result, Loft Dynamics' technology revolutionized the department's training program, enhancing pilot preparedness, safety, and skill development, while also allowing LAPD to extend its expert training globally to other pilots.
