Environmental Data Flow Six Sigma Process Improvement Savings Overview

Los Alamos National Laboratory faced slow, costly environmental data processing after receipt from analytical laboratories and launched a Six Sigma improvement effort in 2009 to streamline workflows. They engaged Locus Technologies to modernize the Environmental Data Flow using cloud-based environmental data management and automatic electronic validation (auto‑validation) alongside process mapping and job restructuring.

Locus Technologies implemented cloud computing, auto‑validation, elimination of redundant reviews, mapping and change‑control practices, producing validated and projected savings of $14.6 million over FY10–FY15 (including $10.0M cloud savings, $2.5M auto‑validation, $1.0M Phase‑1 validation gains and $1.1M from reduced review/map effort). The program also cut median data delivery time by 98% (from roughly 50–60 days to about 1 day) and increased transparency and sample‑planning accuracy.
