MnSCU Improves VDI Performance and Desktop Disaster Recovery Using ProfileUnity to Migrate to Non-persistent Virtual Desktops

Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System, one of the largest postsecondary systems in the U.S., moved early into virtual desktops but found its persistent desktop model was becoming harder to manage as disks grew and resiliency and disaster recovery needs increased. The organization looked for a way to move to a non-persistent VM pool architecture while still managing user profiles and the desktop environment, and selected Liquidware’s ProfileUnity.

Liquidware’s ProfileUnity supported the migration by harvesting user, application, and data settings into a universal profile and moving them in the background with network throttling, allowing users to keep working during the cutover. The solution also cleaned up and compressed profiles, with ratios as high as 50:1, and added FlexApp application layering to reduce the number of master images. After the change, Minnesota State Colleges and Universities reported better performance, the ability to back up user personas, fewer data-mapping problems, and easier collaboration for software developers.
