Building One of the World’s Fastest Off-the-Shelf GPU Supercomputers

Orange worked with Liqid to tackle the challenge of building a high-performance, flexible GPU supercomputing environment for demanding AI and visual computing workloads. Using Liqid’s composable infrastructure approach, the goal was to deliver massive GPU performance with off-the-shelf hardware rather than a fully bespoke supercomputer.

Liqid implemented the ThinkTank composable GPU system with Liqid Command Center software, Dell EMC PowerEdge R640 nodes, and up to 20 NVIDIA Quadro RTX 8000 GPUs connected through a low-latency PCIe fabric. The result was one of the fastest off-the-shelf GPU supercomputers tested, reaching over 15,000 ResNet50 training images per second with 20 GPUs and improving peer-to-peer bandwidth from 8.59 GB/s to 25.01 GB/s while reducing latency from 33.65 μs to 3.1 μs.
