A Linode Case Study
Nmap is a free, open-source network discovery and security-scanning utility used by millions that also supports inventory and uptime monitoring. As a small, globally distributed project, Nmap struggled with the costs and downtime of bare-metal servers: hardware failures, time-consuming upgrades and migrations, limited ability to scale or remotely administer machines, and trouble handling occasional traffic surges.
By migrating to Linode virtual machines, Nmap gained remote administration, fast one-click provisioning and upgrades, and offloaded hardware maintenance to the provider. The move enabled easier testing and migrations, faster CI-to-release cycles, and elastic scaling for traffic spikes; since deployment they’ve served over 150 TB and ~800,000 downloads via their CDN while benefiting from ongoing resource improvements without increased costs.
