How Zillow Group’s Recruiters and Hiring Managers Work Together to Attract the Right Hires

Zillow Group, the portfolio behind Zillow, Trulia and other brands, faced a talent challenge during a period of extreme hypergrowth—by Q3 2016 the company had hired roughly 1,200 people in nine months. Competing for the same senior tech and sales candidates as Google, Facebook and other large players, Zillow needed to scale quickly while maintaining a high bar for candidate quality.

Zillow addressed this by giving hiring managers LinkedIn Recruiter seats and encouraging “collaborative sourcing,” so managers personally engage passive candidates and help refine searches. The approach drove strong results: 129 hires via LinkedIn in 12 months, over 50% of new hires sourced via Recruiter in six months, a +10% higher InMail response rate when managers reach out, and about 33% of new direct-report hires coming from manager outreach.
