Top UK university develops IT staff with Lynda.com

Durham University, a top-10 UK institution with more than 17,000 students, needed to upskill its 200-strong IT team and prepare everyone for ITIL Foundation certification while keeping training costs and disruption to a minimum. Offsite courses proved too costly and impractical, so the Computing and Information Services department sought a convenient, cost-effective way to raise support standards and change staff attitudes toward service delivery.

Following a successful pilot, the department adopted Lynda.com (LinkedIn Learning) and used a blended model—10 hours of custom, self-paced video playlists followed by a one-day intensive “cram and exam” session—supported by analytics to track readiness. In three months certified staff rose from 10% to 30%, exam pass rates were 100% for those tested, the team is on track to certify all employees within a year, and the university expects to save more than £20,000 while increasing engagement and flexible, mobile learning.
