lynda.com online training boosts learning for students in media technology classes at Pellissippi

Pellissippi State Community College faced a common problem when it launched online media technology classes: instructors struggled to teach hands‑on software skills over the Internet and found homemade instructional CDs inadequate. They adopted lynda.com — a subscription library of professionally produced, on‑demand video tutorials — to provide 24/7 access to high‑quality training in tools like Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Flash, After Effects, HTML/CSS, JavaScript and PHP.

Using a state grant to pilot multi‑user memberships (initially 75 students, then 100 students and five faculty), instructors integrated lynda.com tutorials into several courses and made the full library available for deeper exploration. Student evaluations showed the videos were invaluable — nearly 80% would pay for membership and up to 90% said they learned more because of the videos — while faculty found the resource essential for teaching and professional development and continued the pilot while seeking ongoing funding.
