Lingotek Collaborative Translation Platform A Vital Player in World Digital Library Multilingual Translations

The Library of Congress launched the World Digital Library to make cultural heritage accessible worldwide, but needed to publish metadata, descriptions and curator videos in seven languages (English, Arabic, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish) across content from 60+ partner libraries. Translating roughly 1,000,000 words for simultaneous multi‑language release made traditional workflows impractical.

Lingotek’s Collaborative Translation Platform was chosen to automate and scale the work via API ingest, translation memory, machine translation, terminology management and a social production model. Using 24–36 in‑country contractors working in parallel, the team leveraged reused strings and TM matches to speed translation and review; the project delivered ~1,000,000 translated words across the target languages on schedule and on budget ahead of the WDL launch in April 2009.
