Johns Hopkins K4Health Implements Global Health e-Learning Project Using Lingotek’s Translation Network

Johns Hopkins’ Knowledge for Health (K4Health) project manages the Global Health eLearning Center (GHeL), a USAID-funded site offering free continuing professional development for public health workers. K4Health needed to add multilingual capabilities to its Drupal-based CMS and LMS after an inefficient, manual Word-to-PDF translation workflow produced non-interactive, hard-to-update course materials that lacked the site’s full functionality.

K4Health piloted the Lingotek Translation Network to translate the site shell and select courses into Arabic, French, Portuguese, and Spanish. Lingotek augmented Drupal modules, automated translation via connectors, and implemented a process for non-conforming text so updates publish continuously; the pilot courses were live within three weeks. The solution streamlined workflows, improved accuracy and engagement, supported ongoing monthly updates (six courses translated to date), and helped GHeL better serve 130,000+ users who have earned over 310,000 certificates.
