A Lightning Bolt Case Study
University of Kentucky HealthCare, a large academic health system, faced growing complexity in its hospitalist scheduling: before partnering with Lightning Bolt they spent about 1,480 hours per year coordinating physician schedules, struggled to maintain shift and on-call equity, and relied on a time-consuming paper-based shift-swap and approval process. As the division expanded beyond 50 hospitalists, manual spreadsheet methods and ad hoc swaps became increasingly error-prone and administratively burdensome.
Lightning Bolt implemented its AI-powered, web-based scheduling solution to automatically generate optimized physician schedules, enable on-the-go self-swaps, and centralize policy-driven rules and preferences. As a result, Lightning Bolt reduced UK HealthCare’s scheduling workload by 82% (now 260–520 hours/year), delivered a 99.7% approval rate for time-off requests and 100% approval for major holidays, and achieved fairer distribution of night, swing, weekend, and jeopardy shifts.
