Luxottica faced a challenge in the lens cleaning area of its manufacturing process, where operators had to manually manage the complex sequencing of very similar lenses across multiple trays and machines. This difficult cognitive task led to frequent mix-ups, which created defects downstream. To address this, Luxottica partnered with vendor LightGuide to implement its projector-based augmented reality system.

The LightGuide solution projected visual work instructions directly onto the work surface, highlighting which lenses to handle next to eliminate sequencing errors from the operator's responsibilities. This resulted in a 19% reduction in sequencing errors and a 29% reduction in training time for new operators. The implementation also translated to significant annual labor savings and allowed operators to focus on quality and other value-added tasks.
