Liberal Arts College in Alabama Pioneers New Implementations of Video Collaboration Technology in the Classroom

Birmingham‑Southern College (BSC) is a small, private liberal arts school in Alabama serving about 1,300 students. Prompted by a peer in its Associated Colleges of the South consortium, BSC needed affordable, easy‑to‑deploy video collaboration to create connected classrooms and expand experiential learning, but faced strict budget and timeline constraints and wanted a solution that wouldn’t require major network redesign.

After evaluating vendors, BSC selected Lifesize (Team 220 and UVC Platform) for its quality, rapid demo setup and intuitive UI. The system was quickly integrated with a Mondopad to show both presenter and content, enabling virtual guest speakers, cross‑campus links, and plans for students abroad to share live via Lifesize UVC ClearSea; the college is expanding use and planning four additional blended learning classrooms.
