Collaborative Research Pioneers at Calit2 Use LifeSize HD as their ‘Everyday’ Video System

The California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2), a joint research institute at UC San Diego and UC Irvine, needed an “everyday” high‑quality video communications tool to keep more than 900 researchers and external partners seamlessly connected across campuses and around the world. With a focus on visualization-heavy work in nanotech, life sciences and cyberinfrastructure—and state‑of‑the‑art facilities like the HIPerSpace display—Calit2 required a system that delivered superior visual clarity without getting in the way of research.

Calit2 deployed LifeSize Room and LifeSize Express HD systems campuswide for their combination of HD image quality, price–performance and H.239 data‑sharing, and found them reliable and easy to use. The systems are now used daily to support major projects (CAMERA, PRAGMA) and troubleshoot ultra‑high‑resolution displays like HIPerSpace (287 million pixels), improving real‑time collaboration, accelerating research workflows and reducing the need for travel.
