A Liferay Case Study
SW2, the ICT Shared Service for Malvern Hills, Worcester City and Wychavon district councils, supports about 1,000 users and manages around 120 legacy business applications. With a small development team and three different intranet systems (SharePoint Server 2007, SharePoint and a traditional CMS), SW2 needed a single, open-source web-based platform that provided a portal, CMS and development environment to drive a customer-first self-service strategy.
After evaluating SharePoint, Alfresco and MindTouch, SW2 selected Liferay Portal EE, which was quick to set up and replicated existing SharePoint features while running on Linux/VMware and MySQL. Liferay consolidated sites and legacy front ends into a consistent public interface, accelerated the shift to online services, reduced face-to-face/phone/written interactions, delivered greater ROI than SharePoint, and provided a central collaborative system with vendor support and training.
