Case Study: NASA's GLOBE Program achieves scalable global collaboration and cloud cost savings with Liferay

GLOBE, sponsored by NASA, supports 30K organizations with a new portal framework

The GLOBE Program, a NASA- and NSF-sponsored global education initiative active in 116 countries, needed to modernize a 15-year legacy data and web system that supported over 30,000 organizations and tens of thousands of users. The aging stack was hard to maintain, difficult to enhance, and could not easily enforce the program’s complex permissions, multilingual needs and high-volume traffic.

SSAI rebuilt GLOBE.gov on Liferay Portal, migrating legacy content and adding integrated user/content management, modular plugins, workflow for hierarchical publishing, single sign-on and mobile responsiveness, then moved the site to cloud hosting. The new platform scaled to thousands of organizational and user pages, added 5,000 users, increased traffic by 20%, delivered significant cloud cost savings and won Liferay’s 2013 Website of the Year award.
