Delivering Educational Excellence Beyond Borders to 170,000 Students

The University of London International Programmes, a federation of 18 member institutions and the world’s oldest distance-learning provider, serves over 170,000 international students and was handling 1.1 million page views per month. Faced with remote learners who lacked a sense of community and rising mobile-first expectations, the university needed a responsive, scalable student portal with single sign-on, stronger content-management capabilities, and a way to free IT and developers to focus on higher-value work.

The university adopted the Liferay platform to provide a full CMS, responsive design, single sign-on, role-based permissions and adaptive mobile rules, plus bundled developer tools and community support. The new portal made content updates and cross-site management easier, empowered business users to work independently of IT, and increased student engagement and satisfaction—improving Net Promoter Score and delivering a better experience to 170,000 students while enabling plans for greater personalization and regional targeting.
