A Liferay Case Study

Preview of the Embrapa Case Study

Customized portal improves user experience and online presence

Embrapa, Brazil’s federal agricultural research corporation founded in 1973, develops technology and innovation to boost agriculture and livestock productivity. With more than 9,500 employees and 46 research centers, Embrapa needed to modernize a fragmented web presence: early portals used different technologies and hosts, causing duplicated content, inconsistent interfaces and poor content retrieval. After evaluating five open-source CMS options, Embrapa chose Liferay and completed portal, system and developer training.

In partnership with SEA Tecnologia, Embrapa implemented a unified Liferay portal that standardized content insertion, categorization and management, integrated multiple databases, and increased code reuse and cross-team collaboration. The new site dramatically improved access and engagement: BDPA monthly visits rose from 271,019 to over 1 million, page views increased 124% year-over-year (August), average time on site grew from 2:52 to 4:11, and Embrapa ranked 24th globally and 11th in the Americas among research centers in 2014—2nd among agricultural research centers worldwide.
