Case Study: VIPnet achieves a scalable, unified portal serving 450,000+ users with Liferay

A Liferay Case Study

Preview of the Vipnet Case Study

Croatia's first private mobile operator uses portal to unite disparate apps

VIPnet, Croatia’s first private mobile operator that rapidly grew into a leading telco and acquired cable provider B.net, faced a fragmented 2008 portal landscape made up of standalone applications, heavy vendor dependence, and no reusable modules. The company needed a single portal container to consolidate legacy apps, enable continuous development, and standardize its platform across the group.

After evaluating vendors, VIPnet chose Liferay for its open-source, Java/JSR portlet framework, cross‑platform flexibility, vendor independence, scalability and easy Oracle integration. The new portal now serves over 450,000 users, enables faster site changes, introduces Web 2.0 features (community, blogs, widgets), improves stability and load times, and gives engineers better control—while VIPnet continues migrating remaining applications and rolling out mobile sites for its brands.
