Case Study: Societe Generale consolidates 169 intranet sites into 40 multilingual portals and cuts site build time to 3 days with Liferay

A Liferay Case Study

Preview of the Societe Generale Case Study

An innovative intranet portal for an optimal user experience

Societe Génale, a major European bank with ~148,000 employees in 76 countries, faced a 2010 challenge: 169 intranet sites built on obsolete technology handling 4 million page views per month. The Group needed a more scalable, cost‑efficient platform (targeting a 20% maintenance reduction), faster site creation and better change management so business teams could manage content without heavy IT involvement.

Societe Génale selected Liferay and migrated via a pilot, using its web‑factory templates to industrialize rollouts. The result: consolidation from 169 to 40 multilingual sites (including 13 sites merged into one), new site delivery cut from ~1 month to 3 days, greater business‑team autonomy, personalized Web 2.0 features (blogs, alerts, ratings), improved accessibility and a unified “Digital Workplace” rolled out by late 2013, with intranets available on tablets and smartphones.
