Case Study: Grants.gov achieves 98% increase in search usage and a unified, cost-saving platform with Liferay

A Liferay Case Study

Preview of the Grants.gov Case Study

A single website for 4 million weekly visitors enables collaboration across all 26 federal agencies

Grants.gov, the federal gateway for finding and applying to over 1,000 grant programs, serves about 4 million weekly visitors worldwide. Faced with an outdated, siloed legacy environment (17 separate systems) and poor search that made finding opportunities difficult, the agency needed a modern, scalable platform that could be updated quickly without disrupting service.

Grants.gov adopted Liferay, using a templated, modular approach to consolidate the legacy systems into a single site, add microsites and collaboration tools, and implement a federated search with Solr. The new platform launched in six months, delivered a modern UX, cut licensing and labor costs, and drove a 98% increase in search usage—helping Grants.gov become the fourth most visited site in the government space.
