Capella University, a leading fully online institution offering bachelor’s through doctoral programs, needed a more flexible, integrated portal to unify access to billing, course selection, grades and student services. After deploying PeopleSoft ERP, Capella found the built‑in portal lacked design flexibility and integrations to deliver a personalized, state‑of‑the‑art web experience that would serve as the university’s virtual representation.

Capella chose Liferay Portal for its open standards, built‑in CMS and social features, integrating it with PeopleSoft and Blackboard via web services to create a personalized course dashboard, drag‑and‑drop Degree Completion Plan, groups and expanded user profiles. The Liferay-based iGuide now serves nearly 40,000 users, has generated over 100,000 social connections, is preferred by more than 90% of students, and supports ongoing enhancements like mobile access and additional social and faculty tools.
