A Liferay Case Study
The Local Government Association (LGA) is the national voice for local government in the UK, representing 421 member authorities. Facing a politically and functionally diverse audience, the LGA needed a website that could deliver customised content to many user types, integrate with enterprise systems, follow open source/open standards, be easy for its Marketing & Communications team to use, and reduce costs and reliance on a single proprietary provider.
The LGA consolidated its digital services on the Liferay portal, using its configurable roles and organisation model to map 121,000 users, integrate the existing LDAP user database, and create four locally administered sub‑sites for political groups. The solution streamlined workflows, reduced custom coding and provider dependence, integrated with other systems (including the Knowledge Hub), and drove strong results: about 50,000 new registrations in the first 12 months, ~5,000 new councillors accessing dedicated services, and a ~40% reduction in operating costs.
