Enterprise Image Exchange Improves Workflow in Outpatient and Trauma Care Settings

Boston Children’s Hospital, one of the world’s largest freestanding pediatric facilities and the busiest pediatric trauma center in New England, was struggling with an influx of outside imaging on CDs that clogged outpatient clinics (notably orthopedics) and left the trauma team without reliable, timely access to priors during emergency transfers. To address these workflow and patient-safety challenges, Boston Children’s engaged the vendor lifeIMAGE and its enterprise image exchange platform to modernize how outside exams are received and accessed.

lifeIMAGE enabled instant upload and network-wide viewing of patient CDs, electronic receipt of images ahead of transfers, and centralized import of image requests—moving turnaround from days to minutes. As a result, more than 3,200 exams are now sent electronically to the Trauma Department annually, 75% of frequent referrers converted within six months, clinicians avoided unnecessary transfers and repeat imaging (reducing pediatric radiation exposure), front‑desk staff now manage uploads to free clinician time, and teams have been able to plan care in advance—including routing a critically injured toddler directly to the OR.
