Wärtsilä - Customer Case Study

Wärtsilä Finland Oy, a supplier of lifecycle power solutions for marine and energy markets, and one of its key vendors, VM-Group Oy, faced operational inefficiencies from manual, paper-based processes. Wärtsilä’s Vaasa factory struggled with unreliable internal statistics, missed or unrecorded order changes, and unnecessary production, while VM-Group often continued work on cancelled orders—prompting a push to transfer order, delivery, and invoice data electronically to reduce errors, cut costs, and tighten production control.

They implemented Liaison Technologies’ NetEDI (EDI)-based solution, which proved lighter, cheaper, and more flexible than earlier options and interoperable with other operators. The system automated order and invoicing through a single interface, brought order, delivery and invoice data directly into suppliers’ systems, cut mistakes to a minimum, reduced inventory and lead times, and accelerated responsiveness; Wärtsilä reached 50% electronic data flow quickly with plans to exceed a 70% target while onboarding more suppliers and expanding to PDF/CAD transfers.
