Case Study: Walmart achieves seconds-fast food traceability with Hyperledger Fabric from LF Decentralized Trust

A LF Decentralized Trust Case Study

How Walmart brought unprecedented transparency to the food supply chain with Hyperledger Fabric

Walmart faced the significant challenge of tracing the source of food-borne illnesses, a process that could take days or weeks within its complex supply network. This lack of transparency meant entire categories of food had to be discarded during an outbreak, harming both consumers and farmers. To solve this, Walmart worked with the vendor LF Decentralized Trust, using a solution based on the Hyperledger Fabric blockchain.

The solution built on Hyperledger Fabric created a decentralized and immutable ledger for tracing food items. The results were transformative: tracing the provenance of a mango, which previously took nearly seven days, was reduced to 2.2 seconds. As a result of this success with LF Decentralized Trust, Walmart now traces over 25 products and has begun requiring its suppliers of leafy greens to use the system, bringing unprecedented speed and transparency to food safety.
